Citrix Workspace App - Wikipedia

I am just wondering why someone would instll one over the other, and what the benefits are to one over the other. Citrix Receiver is a container for the Xen plugins. When Receiver is installed, you can remotely install plugins to a client machine without having to visit the machine. So the receiver will listen to your citrix environment for clients and requests.

The idea is that you have one application Receiver and add plugin to that app e. XenApp client, Xen Desktop etc. The ICA file however is a static config file that works along with the receiver. The receiver is the required app to run the config file. No receiver, no running config file. The other brilliant thing with the receiver is that you can push out new config and new app centrally of course being the whole ethos behind Citrix and is much more dynamic, whereas an ICA file is static and in order to be changed a new one has to be added to the machine manually to replace the config etc.

This of course can be done via GPO or login script but is not as tidy as the receiver solution. Thank you very much for your informative response: I have one final question. If someone is downloading the receiver for windows, do they also have to download the ICA file or does the receiver come with ICA file?

I am assuming they would have to download separately. I am new to using the receiver and I couldn't find the answer in the links above.

You cant really download ICA files, they are created in your environment. Also, you shouldn't need to use ICA files anymore. All you have to do is create a published application in Citrix Access Management Console and assign it to a group.

The people in that group, as long as they have the receiver on there machine and receiver is setup to listen to the correct server, will automatically get this app show up as a desktop icon on there PC. Make sure they have the "Offline Plugin" installed on the receiver and you'll be laughing! Most frustrating!!!
